Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias, 27, has been arrested by police for domestic violence after four years. Dodger fans are disappointed and hope he never takes the mound again.
“Urias has been arrested and charged by police with domestic violence,”안전놀이터 MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, reported on Friday.
This is not the first time Urias has been accused of domestic violence. In 2019, he was arrested for using physical force during an argument with his wife in a parking lot. He was suspended for 20 games without pay, though his wife claimed she “tripped,” and he was later charged with domestic violence.
No player has been suspended twice for this offense since Major League Baseball adopted the Domestic Violence Policy in 2015. If Urias is found guilty of the charges, which are still under investigation, he would be the first player ever to be suspended twice.
Urias disappointed fans once again in 2019.
Urias is the Dodgers’ ace. He led both leagues in wins (20) in 2021, and last year, his 2.16 ERA led the National League and ranked second in both leagues. This year, he’s struggled, but he’s still energized his team with a 21-11 record, 4.60 ERA, 117 strikeouts, and a 1.16 WHIP in 117 innings pitched.
At the same time, he was set to become a free agent at the end of the year. Urias has consistently proven his value as a starter since debuting in the big leagues in 2016, so even if he struggled this year, he could still be worth a fair amount of money. But now, he’s in danger of never wearing a Dodgers uniform again, let alone a big contract.
It’s unclear whether Urias will ever pitch on a major league mound again.
The Los Angeles Times wrote in a column after Urias’ arrest, “Same player, same problem. “Urias was given a second chance (in 2019), and he blew it, betraying his team and the people who believed in him. There are still many options (for Urias’ future), but he will never throw a ball for the Dodgers again.”
There are also calls for Trevor Bauer, 32, of the Yokohama Basestars, who left the team after allegations of sexual assault against a woman, to be effectively banned from the league. Bauer was forced to leave the major leagues and move to Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) after multiple allegations of sexual assault surfaced against him.
Meanwhile, Dodger Nation, a Dodger news site, has opened a poll asking, “Do you agree with the statement that Urias should not play in Dodger games in the future? Nearly 2,500 people have voted, with 74.3% agreeing, 9.8% disagreeing, and 15.9% withholding their opinion. The majority of Dodger fans seem to have turned their backs on Urias at this point.
How will Urias end up?
