‘Sincerely serve in the military’ Yang Chang-seop vows to return in 2025 as a better version of himself

Samsung Lions pitcher Yang Chang-seop, who was unable to complete the season and took a leave of absence to attend to military matters, updated fans on his status.

“Hello, it seems like it’s been a long time since I’ve said hello to you,안전놀이터” Yang said on his SNS (social networking service) on the 27th. “I’ve been training hard in the training center, reading the letters (online letters) from many people,” he continued.

“I was unable to finish this season and enlisted in the military, but first of all, I would like to apologize to the Samsung Lions fans and fans who supported me for not being able to finish (the season) and show a better performance,” Yang Chang-seop said. “I will come back in the 2025 season with a better and healthier appearance,” he vowed.

Yang, who graduated from Cheongnyangjoong-Deoksugo, was recognized for his potential in high school and was selected by Samsung with the second overall pick in the second round of the 2018 Korean National Team Draft. In his first year as a professional, he went 7-6 with a 5.05 ERA in 19 games and 87⅓ innings, showing promise as a starter.

However, injuries have always been a problem for him. Yang complained of elbow pain heading into the 2019 season, and in March of that year, he underwent surgery and spent more than a year rehabbing. In 2021, he only pitched nine games for the first team due to a back injury.

Yang was one of the players the coaching staff had high hopes for last season, as he was limited to six appearances with the first team due to a shoulder injury. He was given two starts at the beginning of the season, but after failing to produce satisfactory results, he was dropped from the competition.

After getting another chance in late May, Yang was sent back to the second team on June 1 against the Incheon SSG Landers after giving up 11 runs on 10 hits (four home runs) in four innings with two walks and two strikeouts, his worst performance since his debut. However, after being called up in mid-June, Yang seemed to provide some stability to the Samsung bullpen as a reliever, but he was unable to complete the season.

Yang was placed on full-time reserve and is expected to return in the 2025 season. Fans, teammates, and the coaching staff are still excited about his potential. It will be interesting to see if he can continue to improve and take the mound as he hopes.
